| Tuesday, November 25. Nine Hurricanes Recognized on All-League. On Monday, the Northwest 2B/1B League released their selections, all voted on by the league’s coaches, for the Boys’ Soccer All-League recognition and Mount Vernon Christian was well represented. The Hurricanes had two players earn first team honors, four recognized on the second team, and two honorable mention recipients, as well as one of the three yearly special awards. ![]() Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth, who guided the Hurricanes to a 17-2-3 overall season record after missing out on the postseason a year ago, was recognized as the league’s 2025 Coach of the Year. MVC finished second in league, won the District One and Two Championship, and earned a third place trophy at the 1B/2B State Tournament. Senior forward Sean Russell and Junior defender Zane Dahlberg were First Team All-League selections for the Hurricanes. Russell finished the season with 27 goals and 40 for his career. Dahlberg anchored the Hurricanes’ defense and added 16 assists on the offensive end primarily from long throw-ins and deep free kicks. Second team recipients were Connor Mounts, sophomore forward; Logan Mounts, senior goalkeeper; Walker Wohlgemuth, freshman midfielder, and Grady Woodmansee, sophomore midfielder. Senior midfield/forward Lane Tenborg and Nolan Wohlgemuth, junior midfielder were honorable mention selections. MVC had the most players selected to the All-League listing, while Orcas Island had seven players and Friday Harbor five. Orcas Island had the other two yearly awards with the Player of the Year and the Vikings were recognized with the 2025 Team Sportsmanship Award. (Photo credit on this post: Leanne Jungquist) |
| Saturday, November 22. MVC Earns Third Place with Strong Second Half. During a fifteen minute span just into the second half, the Hurricanes scored three goals to break open a 1-1 halftime draw and they closed out their season with a 4-2 Consolation Final win over Evergreen Lutheran. ![]() The victory earned MVC the State’s Third-Place trophy, which ties them for the second best finish in program history. The only other seasons with an equal or better finish came in 2004 when MVC had a third-place State finish in the A/B classification and the 2014 State 1B/2B Championship season. Mount Vernon Christian got on the scoreboard first in the 33rd minute when Nolan Wohlgemuth fed a perfect ball to Sean Russell who one touched the pass into the goal for the lead. Less than a minute later on their next counterattack, the Eagles’ Max Follmar buried a low drive into the net for the equalizer. The evenly played and wide-open first half saw both schools having opportunities to score, but MVC goalkeeper Logan Mounts came up big, as did the Eagles’ keeper. ![]() ![]() Following the break and taking advantage of Evergreen Lutheran playing a ridiculously high defensive line, the Hurricanes attacked by sending balls to space or over the top resulting in quick success. In the 42nd minute, Sean Russell sent a pass through the EvLu defenders and Connor Mounts ran onto the ball for a shot that was partially deflected by the goalkeeper. Mounts slid toward the ball and got just enough of it and Eagles could not stop the effort as the ball slowly trickled into the net, giving MVC a 2-1 lead. ![]() Four minutes later following a EvLu foul, Walker Wohlgemuth successful took a free kick from outside the penalty area and put it into the upper back part of the net upping the Hurricanes lead to 3-1. MVC scored for the final time on the season in the 57th minutes when Sean Russell was on the receiving end of a sweet corner kick delivered by Walker Wohlgemuth. Evergreen Lutheran tried to get back into the match with a 66th minute goal from Gabe Habek, which cut the MVC margin to 4-2. The Eagles had a number of great looks during the next fifteen minutes, but Logan Mounts made the saves, the defense cleared balls away, and the Hurricanes celebrated when the match ended. ![]() (Photo credit on this post: Leanne Jungquist) |
| Friday, November 21.Hurricanes Stopped in Semi-Final Shootout. After what appeared to be the match-winning goal for Mount Vernon Christian in the 77th minute giving the Hurricanes a 2-1 comeback lead, Saint George’s scored on a short breakaway in stoppage time of the second half to tie the match at 2-2 forcing overtime. Neither school scored in either of the two, five-minutes of extra period play, forcing five rounds of a penalty kick shootout. In kicks from the spot, the Dragons converted all five of their attempts, defeating the Hurricanes, 5-4 in the shootout and earned a trip to the 1B/2B State Championship, where they will face the defending champion Orcas Island Vikings. Mount Vernon Christian (16-3-2) will be back on the turf at Mount Tahoma Stadium earlier than they had hoped on Saturday for the 11:00AM Consolation Final with Evergreen Lutheran (9-2-4) for the third/fourth place match. It marks the sixth time in program history for MVC playing in the consolation match, which they have won just once back in 2004. ![]() After a relatively even first part of the opening half, Saint George’s scored in the 20th minute on a low, left-footed strike from the top of the penalty box by Gavin Eliason that just alluded Hurricane keeper Logan Mounts. The two schools went to the break with SGS leading, 1-0. MVC made adjustments at halftime and came out with renewed play all over the field and took control of the match’s momentum. ![]() In the 57th minute, the Hurricanes were rewarded for their tenacity when Sean Russell raced forward for a strong touch on the ball as the SGS keeper came out, misplayed the ball, and as it slowly rolled free, Russell was able to tie the match at 1-1 with a sweet touch into the back of the net. Play continued with MVC having much of the attack, but Saint George’s was able to counterattack some over the next 20 minutes. Then the dramatic ending to the match started! ![]() In the 77th minute, Lane Tenborg served a corner kick into the box, MVC had an initial shot that was saved but not corralled, and Grady Woodmansee got a foot on the ball and scored giving the Hurricanes a very late 2-1 lead. However, in what turned out to be the final thirty seconds of added time in regulation play, SGS’s Graham Reichel fielded a little pass, got free through the Hurricane defenders and scored the equalizer. Neither school scored in the overtime periods, although the Hurricanes came very close, setting up the shootout penalty kicks, which was a cruel way to settle the hard and well played match by both schools. ![]() Saint George’s converted their attempts and defeated the Hurricanes, 5-4 in kicks from the spot. Thursday, November 20.State Championship Weekend Preview.![]() “This upcoming weekend is glorious. It’s brilliant. And it’s what we’ve worked for all season, if not longer,” Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth recently shared about Mount Vernon Christian being a semi-finalists for the second time in four seasons and competing in the 2025 WIAA 1B/2B Boys’ Soccer State Championship Weekend. The Hurricanes and their supporters will converge on Mount Tahoma Stadium in south Tacoma Friday for the two-day tournament, along with the three other schools that were top-seeded by the WIAA seeding committee after each advanced through quarterfinal wins and will meet each other in Semi-Final action Friday. In the 4:45PM boys’ opener, second-seeded Mount Vernon Christian will face third-seeded Saint George’s. The 7:00PM nightcap has fourth-seeded Evergreen Lutheran facing top-seeded Orcas Island. MaxPreps, the nationwide, high school athletics website, also has Orcas Island and Mount Vernon Christian one and two in their rankings, but has Evergreen Lutheran third and Saint George’s fourth, citing the Dragons’ low strength of schedule number. The losers of Friday’s matches will play a 10:30AM Consolation Final for third or fourth place, while Friday’s winners will advance to the State Championship match Saturday afternoon at 3:30PM. ![]() ![]() MVC has had 12 players contribute with goals scored during the season. They are led in scoring by senior Sean Russell with 24 goals and sophomore Connor Mounts with 17. ![]() As a team, 11 Hurricane players provided assists that made goal scoring easier. Junior defender Zane Dahlberg and freshman Walker Wohlgemuth lead MVC with 15 assists each – Dahlberg’s primarily from long throw-ins and deep free kicks, while Wohlgemuth’s set-ups have mostly come from well-struck corner kicks and balls played into the box. ![]() Senior Lane Tenborg, who has come up big in the biggest matches, has six goals and five assists while providing a high level of field play for the Hurricanes. Consistent and solid midfield play by junior Nolan Wohlgemuth and sophomores Grady Woodmansee and Sam Kincaid have served MVC well all season. The team’s defense has been anchored by Dahlberg, juniors Kyler Woodmansee and Josh Hebaus, along with sophomore Noah VanderKooy. ![]() Senior goalkeeper Logan Mounts has come up with a good number of saves when summoned to do so and recorded eight clean sheets on the season. MVC’s reserves have provided good field minutes this season and will be ready to go when Coach Wohlgemuth calls on them. When asked about the team’s play, Wohlgemuth shared, “This group has shown focus, resilience, tenacity, and consistency.”The Hurricanes’ District One/Two Championship match two weekends ago was a 2-1 win over Orcas Island. In the State Quarterfinals last Saturday, MVC defeated seventh-seeded Mabton, 3-0 for their fourth consecutive postseason win. In early September, the Hurricanes and Saint George’s played to a 1-1 draw. SGS has also lost to Orcas Island this season. The Dragons won the East Cascade (District 5/6) Championship defeating Mabton in a shootout after a 0-0 draw. Last Friday, they earned a trip to Tacoma with a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Lopez Island. Historically, this season’s four finalists have rich boys’ soccer heritages including state tournament participation. Since 2012, Mount Vernon Christian has made 11 state tournament appearances of the thirteen held, the most of any school in the State. The Hurricanes finished with a fourth-place trophy in 2022 and the program has one State Championship in 2014. Saint George’s School has made it to the State bracket nine times during the same period of time. The Dragons have three State championships, also having last placed in 2022 when they finished third. Orcas Island has also qualified nine during the last 13 State Tournaments. The Vikings finished second in 2022 and 2023 and were State Champions in 2021 and 2024. Evergreen Lutheran has claimed a line on the State bracket eight times since 2012, but have not advanced past the quarterfinals since 2018 when the Eagles finished in third place. “On the first day of practice, we talked about hoisting the trophy,” Coach Wohlgemuth shared about the season. “We talked about three distinct phases – regular season. district playoffs, and state playoffs. Nothing was more important than the last phase, but we couldn’t get there without the first two.” The Hurricanes have taken care of those first two segments securing a solid second-place regular season in the tough Northwest League, by winning three District One/Two Tournament matches including the Championship, and advanced to Championship Weekend with their quarterfinal win last Saturday. A lot has gone into the Hurricanes’ season centered around the core values of character, commitment, confidence, consistency, and community. A common sentiment among the players was summed up by senior midfielder and exchange student Aaron Tuitjer, “I am very grateful I have gotten to be a part of this team, and my teammates are like family to me.” “We’ve got what we need to cement a legacy. The next two games will show us how it pans out,” Coach Wohlgemuth offered. Regardless of how the final two matches go for Mount Vernon Christian, this season’s accomplishments have already provided many highlights and memories that will forever be linked to the 2025 Hurricanes. They have already had a tremendous and notable regular season, returned to the district postseason playoffs after missing out on them a year ago, have four postseason wins thus far, and have guaranteed themselves a State trophy. And it would be made even more memorable and sweet with two wins this weekend, the hoisting of the 1B/2B State Tournament trophy, returning the “Golden Man” trophy back to the MVC campus, and being able to add a second gold star to the program’s crest! | Wednesday, October 22.Senior Recognition Held. In 2025’s final home, regular season match this afternoon, four seniors and their parents were recognized for their contribution to the MVC Boys’ Soccer program. Below are a few of the words shared at the ceremony by Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth about each Hurricane senior. ![]() Left to Right: Lane Tenborg, Logan Mounts, Aaron Tueitjer, Sean Russell Aaron Tueitjer “From day one, you brought energy, excitement, personality, and a desire to learn and get better….Every member of this team brings a distinct and unique aspect to the brotherhood and family that we become, and yours is one of eagerness, wide-eyed anticipation, and downright joy. You’ve understood what it takes to work hard and develop, and you’ve never wavered. It’s infectious and impossible for your teammates not to notice and use for their own gain as individuals and as a part of the greater team aspect….Don’t ever change, and always stay in touch.” Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. ~1 Thessalonians 5:11~ Lane Tenborg “You joined us with a spirit of determination and hard-work, and that never wavered, even when your role last year was one of friend and teammate from the sideline… You showed up, you led, you mentored and helped us create an atmosphere last year that is showing up this year….Because of you, we all expect more from ourselves….You were a personality and presence that we needed, and you’ve brought an edge and a demeanor that has elevated us to another level….Continue to not be satisfied with where you’re at or what you’ve got. Your appetite for more is a gift that will propel you to new and better heights throughout your life.” Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. ~Colossians 3:23~ Sean Russell “You have a spirit of desire, of faith, of leadership, and of growth….You’ve never been satisfied with where you’re at, and you always want more, not only for yourself, but for those around you…. The ups and downs you’ve experienced as part of our program have only made you and the team stronger, especially this year….helping to carry us to where we are right now…The way you conduct yourself through thick and thin, through good and bad, will always resonate with me as a coach and I appreciate you immensely….Don’t ever lose sight of your spirit of positivity and faith!” Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. ~Phillippians 3:13-14~ Logan Mounts “I’m fully confident that your greatest days are still in front of you and that your life will continue to shine brighter and brighter with every day that passes….you have had the brightest smile, the most genuine demeanor, and you wear your emotions and feelings like a badge of honor. Those are your gifts! God has given you a spirit that will NOT be broken, will NOT be diminished, and will NOT be denied….You are a leader, an overcomer, a defeater, the head and not the tail, a victor, a winner, a friend, a teammate, and I consider myself not only lucky, but beyond blessed to have been able to watch you grow into the person you are today!” But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. ~Isaiah 40:31~ –photo cropped from the Mount Vernon Christian Facebook page- |
