2025 WIAA 1B/2B STATE TOURNAMENT CONSOLATION FINAL MATCH
November 22.Evergreen Lutheran v. Mount Vernon Christian, 11:00AMM.
(The WIAA 1B/2B Boys’ State Tournament Consolation Final for third or fourth place was played at Mount Tahoma Stadium on the campus of Mount Tahoma High School in south Tacoma.)

Evergreen Lutheran finished the season at 10-3-4 overall.

With the Consolation Final victory for Third Place, Mount Vernon Christian now holds a 11-6-2 advantage with Evergreen Lutheran in the all-time series of matches between the two schools.

Match Notes/Tidbits:
– The match was played between the largest school (MVC) and the smallest school (EvLu) of the four State finalists.
– This was the 22nd match for MVC, which ties (2014) for the most ever played in a season for a Hurricanes team.
– The third place finish was the first in the State 1B/2B classification for the Hurricanes’ and ties them for the second best finish in program history. In 2004, MVC finished with a third place in the State A/B State Tournament.
– The Hurricanes took advantage of the Eagles’ high-line defense and scored three second half goals, the most in a half during the postseason this fall.
– Eli Sports Network broadcasting for NFHS Network, cited the Hurricanes’ Logan Mounts as the match’s Most Valuable Player as the result of his large number of saves, deflections, and grabs.

  “After a devastating outcome on Friday in the semifinal match, the Hurricanes rebounded to earn a 4-2 victory and a 3rd place in State finish.
Sean Russell opened the scoring in the 32nd off a perfectly placed cross by Nolan Wohlgemuth, but the Eagles of Evergreen Lutheran answered a couple short minutes later knotting the score heading into halftime.
Just two minutes into the second half, Connor Mounts got a feed from Russell and put the goal away to take a 2-1 lead.
Four minutes later, Walker Wohlgemuth set up and hit a free kick from 22 yards out for the 3-1 lead.
Russell added his second goal in the 57th minute off a Walker Wohlgemuth corner kick and despite a second goal from the Eagles, MVC finished off their season by hoisting the 3rd place trophy.
I’m very proud of the squad, not only for the entire season and how well we played and represented the school and community, but especially for the way we put last night behind us and ended the season on a win!”


Upcoming Match:
The Hurricanes next match will be at the beginning of September when they open their non-league portion of the 2026 season. Expect another exciting and successful season for the program; one which may see a new league configuration for the five boys’ soccer schools from the Northwest 1B League and the five schools from the Northwest 2B/1B League that play boys’ soccer.
2025 WIAA 1B/2B STATE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL MATCH
November 21.Saint George’s School v. Mount Vernon Christian, 4:45PM.
(The WIAA 1B/2B Boys’ State Tournament Semi-Final match was played at Mount Tahoma Stadium on the campus of Mount Tahoma High School in south Tacoma.)

Full Time Score:
Saint George’s School 2, Mount Vernon Christian 2. (2OT)
Saint George’s wins 3-2 as a result of a 5-4 Shootout advantage.
First Half Score:

All-Time Series Record:
The Dragons and Hurricanes have met in non-league and State Tournament matches over the years. With the State Semi-Final victory tonight, Saint George’s School leads the all-time series with the Hurricanes, 1-10-2.

– A very difficult goal allowed in second half added time by the Hurricanes.
– An extremely difficult way to lose a State semi-final match via a shootout.
– The Hurricanes played an excellent match, especially in the second half where they had the Dragons on their heels most of the time.
– Great crowd of supporters in attendance for MVC.

 “Saint George’s came out in the first half in dominant fashion, dictating the style and pace of play and were rewarded with a goal in the 20th minute and rode the 1-0 lead into halftime and first part of the second half before Sean Russell knotted the score in the 58th minute.
With less than three minutes left in the game, MVC’s Grady Woodmansee put the Hurricanes ahead, but before the Hurricanes could put it away, Saint George’s tied it up with just seconds remaining of stoppage time.
After two scoreless OT periods, SG outscored MVC 5-4 in PK’s to take the win in the semifinal match.” 

Upcoming Match:
The Hurricanes final match of the 2025 season will be the 11:00AM Consolation Final. They will face Evergreen Lutheran, a school they defeated in the District One/Two semi-finals, 2-1. The Eagles lost 6-1 to Orcas Island in their State Semi-Final match.

2025 WIAA 1B/2B STATE TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL MATCH
November 15.Mabton v. Mount Vernon Christian, 2:00PM.
(The WIAA 1B/2B Boys’ State Tournament Quarterfinals match was played at Bulldog Stadium on the campus of Mount Vernon High School.)

Today’s match with Mabton was only the second time the two schools have met. With the State Quarterfinal victory this afternoon, the Hurricaneshold a 2-0-0 all-time series advantage with the Vikings.

– The Hurricanes offensive pressure resulted in 13 corner kicks for the match.

“The Hurricanes secured a trip to the Final Four with a 3-0 win against Mabton at MVHS.
Except for a few stretches throughout the game, MVC dictated the style and speed of play despite the Vikings’ physical style of play.
Connor Mounts started the scoring in the 6th minute off a free kick from outside the box, and Sean Russell added another first-half goal in the 35th minute off a Lane Tenborg assist.
Josh Habeus finished off a Walker Wohlgemuth assist in the 65th minute and the ‘Canes cruised the rest of the way, only allowing one official shot on goal and the clean sheet for goalie Logan Mounts.”

The State semi-final is scheduled for a 4:45PM start.
The other semi-final match will have Evergreen Lutheran v. Orcas Island beginning at 7:00PM at the same site.

2025 BI-DISTRICT ONE AND TWO CHAMPIONS!

– The multiple District Championship is the first for the MVC Boys’ program since 2017.
– In the first half, both schools had two shots on goal; MVC had 5 shots and Orcas Island 6 shots overall. MVC had 2 corner kicks, Orcas 1. Fouls: MVC 4, Orcas 1. Yellow Cards: MVC 1, Orcas 0.
– The second half saw Orcas outshoot MVC 8-6, with two more on goal 6-4. Orcas had 2 corner kicks, MVC 1. Fouls: MVC 6, Orcas 3. Yellow Cards: Orcas 1, MVC 0. But MVC got the important one in the goal!!
– The Hurricanes defense and goalkeeper Logan Mounts kept three good Orcas opportunities out of net during the final minutes of the match.
– Walker Wohlgemuth’s corner kick was a perfect delivery to Lane Tenborg, who flicked it with pace into the goal for what turned out to be the match winner!

“This BI-district Championship did not disappoint!
Fought between two teams who know each other well, MVC struck first when Connor Mounts took a ball into the box and finished 1v1 with the Orcas keeper.
The Vikings responded a little later in the half and knotted the score going in to halftime.
Both teams went back and forth early in the second half until Walker Wohlgemuth whipped a corner kick into the box that Lane Tenborg finished for what ended up being the game-winner.” 


Upcoming Match:
Mount Vernon Christian will be the higher seed for their opening round match of the 2025 WIAA 1B/2B State Tournament on either Friday, November 14 or Saturday, November 15. The opponent for the Hurricanes’ quarterfinal match will be announced Sunday around noon on the WIAA website after the four match-ups for the first round of the State Tournament are decided by the state seeding committee.

– The afternoon produced a match that was physically and emotionally draining for Hurricane players and coaches.
– This afternoon’s win improves on the 1-1 draw against the Eagles on the same field back on September 6 that began the season.
– The semi-final win puts MVC back into a combined District Championship match for the first time since 2017.
– The 14 season victories is the most by a Hurricane squad since 2016.

 “A wet and windy second round of the Bi-District Tournament started out with a bang as MVC’s Sean Russell scored off a Lane Tenborg assist in the 3rd minute.
Both squads went back and forth until an Evergreen Lutheran wind-aided throw in was tipped in before the half.
The second half went back and forth until the 75th minute when Walker Wohlgemuth nodded in a ball from Zane Dahlberg to secure the win and a spot in the Championship on Saturday.” 


Upcoming Match:
Mount Vernon Christian (14-1-3)will meet Orcas Island in the 2:00PM District One/Two Championship match on Saturday, November 8 at Sammamish High School. The start time is still to be announced.
Orcas Island (16-0-2) survived their semi-final match with Friday Harbor (12-3-0) early today in Anacortes. The match was played in gusts and sustained winds of 25-30 MPH. After regulation and two overtimes, the match was settled with kicks – Orcas claimed a 4-3 victory.
Both the Hurricanes and Vikings will also be headed for the 1B/2B State Quarterfinals to be played either November 14 or 15 depending on the schools they will face.
November 4.Summit Atlas School v. Mount Vernon Christian, 7:00PM.
(The first round match of the District One/Two Tournament was played at Sedro-Woolley High School Stadium.)

– With the victory, Mount Vernon Christian has qualified for the 1B/2B State Quarterfinals, which will be held November 14 or 15.
– The Hurricanes unofficially outshot the Orca 14-0 in the first half; seven were on goal and added more in the second half finishing with a 24-3 advantage, 13 being on goal.
– Strong, dominance to the ball by the Hurricanes.

  “On a windy and blustery night, the Hurricanes rushed out to a dominating and dictating form of possession, pinning Summit Atlas deep in their own territory, which led to several shots on goal in the first 15 minutes.
Their efforts were rewarded when Walker Wohlgemuth forced the keeper to tip a free kick off the crossbar which fell to the feet of Sean Russel for the first goal of the game in the 24th minute.
In the 35th minute, Wohlgemuth slammed a half-volley into the back of the net, taking MVC into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Possession continued to favor MVC in the second half and Nolan Wohlgemuth added a goal off a Zane Dahlberg assist to complete the shutout win 3-0 in the first round of the Bi-District tournament.
The win secures a spot in the 1B/2B State Quarterfinals for the Hurricanes!”

The Hurricanes will continue play in the District One/Two Tournament on Thursday, November 6 where they will face Evergreen Lutheran (8-0-4 overall) in the District Semi-Final. MVC and the Eagles played to a 1-1 draw back in early September. Evergreen Lutheran defeated Lopez Island, 2-1 earlier this afternoon to advance. The matchwill be played at the Puyallup Valley Sports Complex.

October 28.Mount Vernon Christian at Grace Academy, 3:30PM.(The Northwest League/District One match was played at the Strawberry Field Complex, Marysville. It was the regular season finale prior to the postseason.)

Connor Mounts scored the first goal of the match in the 8th minute off a Zane Dahlberg assist, and scored again in the 37th minute.
Sean Russell added a goal off a Mounts assist in the 52nd minute, and Mounts completed his hat trick in the 52nd minute to round out the scoring.” 


Upcoming Match:
The Hurricanes will open play in the combined WIAA District One and Two Tournament on Tuesday, November 4. As the #2 seed from the Northwest League and District One, MVC will host the match on a turf field against the #3 seed from the Sea-Tac League and District Two. The match will be played at Sedro Woolley High School at 7:00PM with an opponent still to be determined pending results from matches this week. The winner of the opening round match will qualify for the 1B/2B State Quarterfinals, but first will play in a District Semi-Final match on Thursday, November 6 and another District match on Saturday, November 8.

October 22.Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood at Mount Vernon Christian, 4:00PM.(The Northwest League/District One match was played at the Varsity Field on the campus of Mount Vernon Christian. Senior-Parent Recognition was also held this afternoon.)

– Sean Russell’s third goal of the match was his twentieth of the season and thirty-third of his MVC career, moving him to twelfth on the all-time career scoring list.
– The Hurricanes won for the fourth consecutive match since their lone Northwest League loss to Orcas Island and for the ninth time in their last ten matches.
– MVC clinched the second-seed from the Northwest League/ District One in the upcoming combined District One/Two Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, November 4. The Hurricanes will host on a local turf field the #3 seeded school from the Sea-Tac League/District Two.

“It was an idyllic night at MVC as all three senior field players scored on Senior Night and the fourth senior got the shutout in goal as the Hurricanes cruised to an 8-0 league win over Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.
Senior Sean Russell led the way with a hat trick with goals scored in the 2nd, 14th, and 39th minutes.

Senior Aaron Tueitjer scored his first varsity goal in the 15th minute and fellow SeniorLane Tenborg added his goal in the 35th minute.
Grady Woodmansee added a goal and two assists and Connor Mounts added a second half goal.

October 20. Lopez Island at Mount Vernon Christian, 4:00PM.(The Northwest League/District One match was played at the Varsity Field on the campus of Mount Vernon Christian.)

The Hurricanes shutout of Lopez Island this afternoon added to their already lopsided record against the Lobos. Mount Vernon Christian’s record improved to 50-8-0 all-time in the series between the two schools.

The Hurricanes were clinical in their approach and play as they dissected the Lobos offensively and held steady defensively this afternoon.
With this afternoon’s win, the Hurricanes reached double figures (10 or more) in 26th time in thirty-six season (35 not including 2020 season shortened by Covid).
– MVC has clinched a postseason spot in the combined District One/Two Tournament beginning on Tuesday, November 4.

  “Scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game, the Hurricanes were rewarded for their possession and play when Connor Mounts took a pass from Walker Wohlgemuth and finished from just outside the box.
MVC continued its possession in the 2nd half and Wohlgemuth found Lane Tenborg in the 46th minute, who finished 1-on-1 with the Lopez keeper.
Mounts completed his brace in the 58th minute off a Tenborg assist and the Hurricanes cruised to the 3-0 league win.”

The Hurricanes will close out their regular season home schedule on Wednesday when they host Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood in a 4:00PM match.
The Eagles are just 3-6-0 for the season and only 1-3-0 for their Northwest League/District One matches. They have yet to play the three best schools – Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island or Friday Harbor.
