| October 10, 2026. MVC THROW-INS DEFEAT COUPEVILLE. The Hurricanes conceded a goal to Coupeville in the fourth minute of the match, but then tallied four goals of their own to post a 4-1 win over the Wolves this afternoon. MVC led 3-1 at the break. All four of the Hurricane goals came from long throw-ins from Zane Dahlberg that were either headed in or deflected past the Coupeville defense and goalkeeper. Grady Woodmansee earned a hat trick scoring three of MVC’s goals. Mount Vernon Christian will enjoy a pleasant drive over to Whidbey Island for a 1:00PM Northwest League/District One match tomorrow. The Hurricanes will seek to bounce back from a 1-0 loss at Orcas Island on Wednesday when they face Coupeville on Mickey Clark Field. The Wolves (7-2-0) has benefitted from an early season slate of matches where they have faced the easiest portion of their schedule. They have two victories each over Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood and La Conner, as well as wins over Evangel Classical, Lopez Island, and Grace Academy. Saturday’s match will be the first for Coupeville against one of the top four League/District schools – that being Mount Vernon Christian. Friday Harbor, Providence Classical Christian and Orcas Island are still upcoming for Coupeville. Saturday’s match should provide an indication of how legitimate the Wolves will be in contending for one of this fall’s expanded postseason spots from District One. |
| October 7, 2026. VIKINGS STOP HURRICANES. A Viking goal in the ninth minute was all the scoring that occurred in the Northwest League/District One match and the Hurricanes fell 1-0 at Orcas Island this afternoon. Orcas Island (9-0-1 overall) moved to 4-0-0 in Northwest League/District One matches, while Mount Vernon Christian (5-0-2 overall) record stands at 2-1-0 in Northwest League/District One play. The Hurricanes will be back in action on Saturday for a 1:00PM match at Coupeville. The Hurricanes will ferry over to Orcas Island and meet up with the Vikings for a Wednesday afternoon match at 4:00PM on the campus field in Eastsound. The Northwest League/District One match will feature the WIAA’s top two listed boys’ soccer schools currently shown on their RPI. The winner will have the inside track toward claiming the Northwest League championship and the top-seed into the District One and Two Tournament the first week of November. The loser of the match will still find themselves in a good spot as they face the rest of the regular season. While some supporters are seeing this as a huge match (and it is somewhat big), the outcome most likely will not be a season-defining match for either school or their program. Looking around the State, it appears reasonable to think that Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island could well meet again once or twice during the postseason. Each school may not be at full strength for the match as both are dealing with injuries and players that will not suit up for the contest. | October 1, 2026. HURRICANES AND HIGHLANDERS HAVE A GO OF IT. Mount Vernon Christian scored two first half goals, added a third early into the second half and posted a 3-1 Northwest League/District One match home victory over Providence Classical Christian this afternoon. The Hurricanes first goal came on a successfully converted penalty kick by Logan Mounts after the Highlanders were whistled for a hand ball in the box. MVC picked up their second goal after PCC was unable to clear the ball out of the box following frantic action. Grady Woodmansee buried his shot into the goal after Landon Lehecka’s shot was tipped out front by the Highlander goalie. The Hurricanes led 2-0 at the break. Mount Vernon Christian made it 3-0 when a ball was headed forward by Nolan Wohlgemuth to Logan Mounts, who raced forward and put a shot past the Highlander keeper. Providence Classical Christian scored late and MVC turned away two potential opportunities in the waning minutes to secure the win. | September 27, 2026. SHARING SOCCER SHORTS. No, not something players wear! Here are a handful of short soccer items that site followers might be interested in. Know about RPI Listings At this time in the season, they are not entirely accurate, they are not a ranking of the best schools, and they do not necessarily indicate strength of schools. Don’t be fooled by some of the schools’ listings. Defense and Shutouts The Hurricanes are the only school statewide that has recorded four shutouts thus far. There are four schools around the State that have produced three shutouts. MVC’s defense has allowed just two goals in their five matches, which is also at or near the best statewide. Several schools have given up three goals. Upper Columbia Academy has not allowed a goal in their three matches against high school opposition. They gave up four goals in an UCA Alumni match today in which the Varsity prevailed, 5-4. Best of Districts From early results, it appears that District One schools are playing at a higher level than elsewhere around the State. (listed alphabetically) Friday Harbor, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island and Providence Classical Christian lead the schools from District One. Only Auburn Adventist Academy and Evergreen Lutheran, who lost 7-1 to Orcas Island, seem most competitive from District Two. The soccer schools that make up District Five/Six are anyone’s guess with Chesterton Academy, Mabton, Prescott, Saint George’s and Upper Columbia Academy all having beaten or played to a draw with each other. Chesterton Academy and Saint George’s, who each were without three to five starters due to injuries and club commitments the weekend MVC played in Spokane, have not won consistently within their district play yet. Mabton and Upper Columbia Academy are currently leading the league east of the Cascades. Six schools from the District One/Two Tournament in November and two schools from the District Five/Six Tournament will advance to the 1B/2B State Quarterfinals November 13 or 14. Alumni Coaches A little late in recognizing two former Boys’ Soccer program stellar Hurricane players who are back coaching the Boys’ and Girls’ programs at the school. Tyler Houtsma, who played for the Hurricanes from 2011-2014 and was one of the leaders for the 2014 State Championship year, is in his fifth season as an assistant coach with Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth. Jeffrey McClelland, who was a standout Hurricane from 2006-2009, has taken over as the head Coach of the Girls’ Soccer program after previously being an assistant coach. |
| September 28, 2026. MVC RECORD FIFTH CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUT. The Hurricanes ferry travel over to Lopez Island resulted in a Northwest League/District One shutout over the Lobos, 3-0 this afternoon, Mount Vernon Christian (1-0-0 League/District, 4-0-2 Overall) scored three first half goals and controlled the match against Lopez Island (0-1-0 League/District, 0-4-0 Overall). This was the Hurricanes fifth consecutive shutout since a 2-2 draw in their first match of the season. | September 23, 2026. STATE’S TOP TEAMS PLAY TO A SCORELESS DRAW. Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island, the State’s top two 1B/2B soccer schools listed on WIAA’s current RPI, played to a scoreless draw this afternoon on the Hurricanes’ home field. In an evenly played match, where MVC had more of the attack in the first half and the Vikings produced more chances in the second half, the non-league match ended at 0-0 as neither team could breakdown the other’s defense for the eventual winner. No overtime is played in the Northwest 1B/2B League or District One matches during the regular season this fall. | September 18, 2026. ‘CANES DOMINATE IN VICTORY OVER KNIGHTS. Mount Vernon Christian’s travel to Spokane started off with an extremely successful outing as they posted a convincing 5-0 victory over Spokane’s Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame in a match played on the campus of Saint George’s School. The Hurricanes jumped to a 3-0 halftime lead and their defense was seldom tested throughout the match. MVC (2-0-1) and Saint George’s (2-3-0) will meet for a Noon match on Saturday. The Dragons have been outscored 13-1 in their last two matches, while the Hurricanes have recorded back-to-back shutouts. |
| September 16, 2026. MVC SET FOR TWO MATCHES THIS WEEKEND. The Hurricanes will make the trek east on Interstate 90 to Spokane for a pair of weekend matches this weekend. The two non-league matches will both be played on the campus field at Saint George’s School. On Friday, September 18, the Hurricanes will face Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame (3-0-0) at 4:30PM. This is the first match all-time with the Knights, who are in just their second season of playing WIAA boys’ soccer. The school first opened in 2020. MVC’s Saturday, September 19 match will have a Noon start with Saint George’s School (2-2-0). The Dragons and Hurricanes met last season in the 1B/2B State Semi-Finals. Saint George’s graduated eight seniors from that squad and have had some early season injuries thus far. | September 11, 2026. MVC Earn Shutout Win. An afternoon ferry ride to San Juan Island was the start of what turned out to be an enjoyable trip and soccer match today for the Hurricanes. After a scoreless first half with Friday Harbor and an additional 25 minutes of the second half action, MVC scored the lone goal of the match, and went on to collect a 1-0 win over the Wolverines on Linde Community Field. | September 6, 2026. Questions and Answers with Coach Wohlgemuth. Before their initial season opening, non-league matches this Thursday (in Bothell v. Providence Classical Christian) and Friday (on San Juan Island v. Friday Harbor), Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth took time to provide a bit of insight about the 2026 season. The Q and A with the MVC coach, who enters his eighth season at the helm, follows: How has the team chemistry or leadership been during the preseason? Losing two distinct and vocal leaders has been very evident, but we have a good group of guys who are stepping up and using their God-given talents to lead the team this season. Who are your top returning starters and key players to watch? I can’t begin to list individuals because I feel like I would need to mention every returner. All four starting defenders return and they led a defense that gave up less than a goal a game. Three or four starting midfielders return and they are very, very strong, along with two forwards with extensive experience. We also have a number of others who will be stepping up and into spots this season. What are the team goals for this season? For as long as I have the blessing of being the coach of MVC, my sole focus will be on helping to shape the next generation of husbands, fathers, and community members. We will grow in our faith and leadership, and will use soccer as the conduit for accomplishing that goal. But make no mistake – I am competitive and I lead a group of very competitive athletes. Our on-field goal is the state championship, each and every year. I believe we have the young men to achieve that goal. What key areas have been the focus of attention during the preseason turnouts thus far? Our defense is stout and experienced. We are focused on continuing the legacy of masking the other team out of our goal and have spent a large amount of time on attacks and the final third. What do you see are the team’s biggest strengths this year? Our strength is that we are very well-rounded. Our defense should be a strength, but I believe our midfield and forward group are as good as any in the state. What are you planning as your tactical identity or style of play this season? We have talented players in the middle and final third of the field who can dominate. Some of these young men have been playing together for ten years and their chemistry is evident. We will have the ability to strike quickly and with precision, as well as methodically and with patience. Who do you see as the main schools as being most competitive this season in the league and from around the State? As per usual, Orcas Island and Friday Harbor will be very competitive within our league. Providence Classical Christian and Lopez Island should also be strong. It will be a good test to see Saint George’s (Spokane) early, and beyond that, I think it’s a wait and see. What areas do you need to improve most on during the non-league matches before your first league/district match? Chemistry, communication, and camaraderie will be a focus, as will strengthening our keeper position. What are you most looking to or most excited about from the squad this season? This is a group who I’ve coached, mentored, and have been very close family with for several years. I’ve got three of my own boys on the team, but they all feel like family. They compete, they love, and they’re wonderful young men. What do you want MVC boys’ soccer program supporters to know and be reminded about regarding the upcoming season? Every year and every group has the responsibility and opportunity to add to the legacy that has been established by each group before them, and we’re proud and honored to have the chance to continue that tradition. |
| Wednesday, August 19. 2026 BOYS’ SOCCER SEASON NEARS Head Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth will put this year’s Hurricanes through 2½ weeks of training, conditioning, and technical workouts beginning next Monday, August 24 in preparation for the upcoming 2026 boys’ soccer season. Wohlgemuth is expecting to greet 25 participants, who will be contending for Varsity roster spots. MVC graduated the goal scoring of forward Sean Russell, the unwavering presence and leadership of midfielder Lane Tenborg, the strong in-net play of goalkeeper Logan Mounts, and the energy and eagerness of reserve Aaron Tueitjer. Despite those departures from last season’s strong Third-Place State 1B/2B finish, Coach Wohlgemuth eagerly welcomes back eight Varsity starters and ten other players from the 2025 roster, along with a handful of talented incoming participants. The Hurricanes should find themselves among just a handful of top-tier schools statewide again this fall. Wohlgemuth and his players most likely be spending preseason turnouts getting comfortable in a variety of positions, while again developing a cohesiveness, and adding depth among the team’s reserves before their non-league season opener on September 10. “While it might be convenient to lament over the quality of student-athletes we lost to graduation, we return a well-rounded group of young men ready and able to step up with continued success and achievement,” Wohlgemuth recently shared. Last spring, the ten soccer schools that make up WIAA’s District One decided to adjust their approach to non-league matches between themselves. This fall, the top five schools over the past two seasons – Orcas Island, MVC, Friday Harbor, Lopez Island, and Providence Classical Christian will play one another as part of their non-league schedules. The other five schools – Coupeville, La Conner, Grace Academy, Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood, and Evangel Classical School will do the same among themselves. Thus far, MVC also has a non-league match schedule in Spokane with Saint George’s. Non-League matches will happen September 10-26. During the last days of September through late October, MVC will face all nine of the District One schools in matches that will count toward postseason seeding into the combined Northwest District One/Sea-Tac District Two Tournament, which begins the first week of November. Another change that spectators will see on the field is how matches conclude. There will be no more overtimes or shootouts during any soccer matches until the postseason. This aligns the Northwest League/District One with the majority of WIAA soccer leagues in all classifications, NFHS, and the NCAA. The change is designed to prioritize player health, reduce cumulative physical fatigue, injury risks, and accept that a hard-fought draw is a valid outcome after regulation time. Both actions (the District One realignment of non-league matches and adopting the way matches end), should also have a positive impact on RPI rankings. When asked about these soccer tweaks, Wohlgemuth said, “Change is good. At least in this case, aligning with other districts and associations is a positive move towards cohesion, and the adjusted approach to the league schedule is a great way to ensure for better competitions for all the member schools.” |
